Campaigning for a better Worcester

Social News

17 July 2009

Please click here for the updated league tables – as you can see, were in a group of four teams  on six points in the middle of the table and it’s going to be close!

On Tuesday evening we played the Garibaldi Pirates and they showed us (in the nicest way possible) that they are in contention for promotion to the first division next season! They beat us 7-0 but since they are such a nice bunch – we won’t hold it against them.

14 July 2009 : DARTS TEAM

We came second again last week, but closer than on the two previous occasions we played the Brewers, eventually finishing on 2-5.

If anyone has had a chance to look at the league table: you’ll see that we’ve everything to play for and a real chance to finish in the top half. Get those darts sharpened!

23 June 2009

We had another close match last week but didn’t quite manage to make it three in a row; it went down to the deciding leg of the final doubles game and we eventually went down 4-3 after a quality finish. It’s worth mentioning that Julian & George played an outstanding doubles game – the standard was exceptional with many scores above 100 and pinpoint finishing. Their opponents were also playing very well and it made for a close game – real ‘edge of the seat’ stuff! Everyone agreed that it was a cracking evening of darts; well done everyone.

This week we’re away again and playing the Beddie Stars at the Bedwardine. As usual we’ll be leaving the Lansdowne at about 8.30pm for a 8.45pm start. I’m haven’t heard about peoples’ availability so I guess it’s: Phil, Andrew, Adrian, Julian & Sarah, George & Joy and of course – myself. Please let me know if you can’t make it or if you’re going there direct. From next week we have a run if home games; it’ll be nice to be on home ground again.

Happy darting,

Andy

Before I start – I must welcome our latest members: Sarah & Julian. They joined the team last week and they will be a welcome addition to the fold – not only do they seem like really nice people but they can also play darts!

We came second again last week to a strong (but beatable – one day!) Brewers team in the Team Knockout. We all had our chances but it was a familiar story on the finishes – we need practice on getting those doubles! George & Phil pulled one out of the bag at the end to save some pride with a win in the doubles to make it 1-6.

12 May 2009

We're at home (hooray) tonight against the Fox Arrows and it's the usual 8.45pm start. I think we're pretty much at full strength this week with George (Joy?), Phil, Andrew, Adrian (I think), Jon (probably) and myself available - if anyone else fancies a game then all will be welcome.

Last week we were away to the 'Old Berks' at the Berkley and we came second again but all the games were close with everyone having chances on their double finishes. Adrian was the star of the show: winning a game in his singles match leg to eventually go down 1-2 and he did the same in the doubles with Jon (again 1-2); unfortunately these were the only successes of the evening and we lost 0-7 with one of our singles matches forfeited due to us being a player short.

Next week is the team knock out 1st round but I don't have any more details yet. The week after next might be a problem with George, Joy and myself (probably) unavailable, so please put it in your diaries.

See you tonight,

Andy

1 May 2009

Hi everyone,

We now have one more away match (against the Old Berks) and then two home games before the team knockout on 19th May - we don’t yet know the draw for this.

We had a disappointing trip to the Garibaldi on Tuesday. They had a very strong (and changed) team and gave us a 7-0 night to forget. As usual we had our chances but we were outplayed and did well to come second! Despite getting stuffed, we enjoyed the evening and their hospitality. We’ve had a couple of close matches and a number of individual games won but no team win yet. I’ve yet to win a game this season (only a couple of legs) and I imagine others get just as frustrated by their own performance as I do about my own. Whilst confidence if not a substitute for skill, it’s surprising how things improve once we start winning and feeling better about our individual performances; it sounds a bit of a cliché but ‘success breeds success’. Without self belief – even the most talented player can’t hit the board.

There has been some discussion about getting team / supporter shirts made and the consensus is that the colour will be deep red (Maroon?) with white lettering. There will be ‘Team Lansdowne’ embroidered on the left breast and optional individual lettering on the back (applied as transfer); this lettering might be a name, nickname or anything moderately tasteful or meaningful to the wearer (or even political comment?). I’ll  try to get an ‘artists impression’ done on the weekend and email it ASAP. If I’ve left anything out then please get in touch.

We’re playing at the Berkley in St Johns on Tuesday and meeting at the Lansdowne beforehand as usual. We just about scraped through for players this week, George & Andrew have said they are unavailable; so tentatively, we have Andy, Adrian, Phil, Jon & Geoff - please let me know if you can’t make it. If anyone else can make it then they will be made very welcome. We need at least 5 players on the night to avoid forfeiting games.

Happy Darting,

Andy

8 April 2009

The fixture list for the Summer League has arrived and, after the predictable alternating ‘home-away-home-away’ rhythm of the winter league, things look a bit higgledy-piggledy but at least we have more home matches then aways. Click here for the list.

3 April 2009

Well, we managed to get a team together at short notice and it was great to see Jim (back from Uni) again. We played the Garibaldi Wildcats who turned out to be a mixture of the ‘Biscuits’ and ‘Pirates’. After a shaky start Phil and Andrew kept us in touch at 2-3 after the singles and there was everything to play for after George & Andrew put us level at 3-3 with the final doubles game to go. Unfortunately, we lost the match at 4-3 but George scored a maximum 180 and a great 68 out also. Ben put on a great spread with some Onion Bhaji’s to go with the usual Sausage, Chips & bread – great stuff J

I don’t have details of any of our other matches yet but as soon as they come in – I’ll let you know. Thanks to everyone for a great evening and a close game; I’ll see you next week.

Happy darting,

Andy

28 March 2009

Please click here for the final league positions for the winter league – sorry they took so long but I have only managed to get my hands on them. We finished above the Plumbers but just missed out to the Beddie Allstars by 6 legs; they can be our next target!

See you soon

Andy

23 February 2009

It was the doubles competition night at the Coppertops last Tuesday. The entries from the Lansdowne were Jon & Phil and George & Andy and it was great to see Andrew pop along to offer support. Phil & Jon were first up and got off to a great start - winning their match 2-1 by grabbing the final two legs after going a leg down at the beginning – a fantastic result. George & Andy were on just as the other two were finishing and went 1-0 up in a high scoring leg but lost the next two legs to eventually go down by 1-2 (sorry George!). In the second round Phil & Jon played really well but unfortunately lost 0-2 in a very close match that really could have gone either way. No silverware to take home but a good night of darts was had by all – I think George summed things up well by saying that: looking at the scores in the various matches – any of the team could win if they played as well as they can.

It’s the singles competition this week – again at the Coppertops. The entries are: Jon, George & Andy and the latest time for registration is 8.15pm with things getting started at 8.30pm. Please pop along to offer support if you can. We’ll be meeting up at the Lansdowne beforehand and leaving no later than 7.45pm.

Happy darting,

Andy

5 February 2009

It came as no surprise that we came second on Tuesday night to a loud but friendly Garibaldi Pirates team. The match was closer than the 7-0 score suggests and I’m sure that if we continue to improve we will get them worried (one day)! Apart from the doubles and singles competitions, starting in a fortnight, that’s it for the Winter League, finishing up with the AGM on 3rd March. I’m not sure where we finally finished in the league but certainly everyone has improved since the Summer League, we have finished higher and taken on some new players (all of whom have done well – thanks).

There’s a chance for a practice and a few beers at the Lansdowne next Tuesday so I’ll look forward to seeing you there. Well done to everyone, players and supporters alike. We need more players for next season (Summer League) so if you feel you could spare a few Tuesday evenings and can tell one end of a dart from the other then pop along or drop me a line – actually, forget that bit about being able to ‘tell one end of a dart from another’ – it’s not that important J.

One final note – did anyone read the Worcester news tonight (Wednesday)? Adrian appears as the ‘First Person’ – it makes good reading and good PR – especially if you had mentioned the darts! I bet Rachel had something to say about the ‘household chores...’

See you on Tuesday, happy darting.

Andy
