DAVID CANDLER
Tribute by Lord Faulkner of Worcester
I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of David Candler. I knew him first as a friend and colleague when we both worked together for the Labour Party at its Transport House headquarters in the late 1960s. Early on in my time there he was promoted to a prestigious press officer’s job at 10 Downing Street, working directly with Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister. I well remember David showing me with great pride first pay cheque, signed personally by Wilson himself.
For many years following the change of government David and I lost touch with each other, until we came together in Worcester. Soon after I got involved in the life of the City, David came up to me at a Swan Theatre event, and our friendship resumed at once. The last time I saw him was on 5 November, when Sarah and he entertained me to lunch at their home in St John’s, and I afterwards took him to Worcester City’s match at St George’s Lane that afternoon – to my amazement David told me that was the first Worcester City match he had ever attended.
David was an entertaining companion, with a fund of indiscreet political stories, and a good friend. He was also a passionate democratic socialist who believed fundamentally in internationalism and the European ideal. He was an excellent journalist, a brilliant press officer, and a fine communications adviser.
I shall miss him greatly, and I send Sarah and their family my deepest sympathy.
